I have been an artists since I was 16. My favorite works are landscapes, portraits and Biblical scenes.
I have worked in pencil, charcoal, as well painting in oils and acrylics.
My primary inspiration is the world around me in all its variety. Also I have been deeply moved by the Bible and the real people found in it. Illustrating those stories is a privilege.
Welcome to JVMcCauleyArt, the web site of the art of Rev. Joseph V McCauley of Virginia Beach, Virginia. I share this as an encouragement to those who want to create their own art, and have a passion to use the artistic gift they have received to its fullest potential. Be Blessed!
** This Web-site is Dedicated to my son, Sean David McCauley (1978-2018). **
I completed my first painting when I was 16, while visiting a friend in southern California. And I have been at it ever since.
In these albums are many of the works I have completed over the years. They include drawings, watercolors, acrylics and oil paintings.
My art training began at that time in the studio of Mary Rowley in Belmont, California. This was my first serious introduction to the world of professional art, and I loved it. Working with Mary, learning techniques, interacting with other students was an encouraging as well as a learning experience. There is something very fulfilling when you see something you see in your mind be duplicated on the paper or canvas you are working on. Then followed the high school years where I learned about stretching my own canvas and framing my own paintings. The most influential teacher from these years was Mr. Allende an art teacher at the College of San Mateo. He inspired my creative side and encouraged me to try different ideas and ways of expressing myself in art. I appreciate and value his mentoring to this day.
Much of what I have learned has been through self-study of the masters, museum going, and research into how those masters did what they did. I was fortunate because of the work I did in high-tech to be able to travel to many countries and was able to personally visit some of the major museums both inside and out of the United States. The Louvre, the Musee DeOrsay, the Musee Rodin, and other museums in Paris are absolute gold-standard places to visit if you are an artist. Trips to Italy and England brought me into contact with the Vatican Collections, the Sistine Chapel, Pompeii, and the various Tate Museums in London. And I must not forget the Rijksmuseum, the Rembrandthuis and the incomparable Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
To see what these masters accomplished is so visually stunning that I find it hard to express. Each work has its own subtleties, nuances, and expression. I think what continues to strike me is that there is a history of men and women who have been given an artistic gift by God and they are all working to express it to its fullest possibilities. I in my own small way get to join this group.
For many years I traveled with my family in areas of the Pacific Northwest territory of the United States, making Astoria, Oregon, my in-laws house our home base. You will see that here in the Pacific Northwest Collection and the Astoria Collection drawings. My father-in-law, Gene Cochran and his beautiful wife Joan are also included here. There are pictures here of my wife, sons, a pet, self-portraits, some just for fun drawings and some more serious reflective works.
As a born- again Christian anything having to do with Jesus, the Holy Spirit, or the Bible has always been of interest to me. Accepting Christ as my Savior is THE most significant and important event of my life and the next. When I draw and paint, I am always moved, appreciative and just blown away by the ultimate creative genius that is the God of the Bible. He didn’t have to draw or paint, he just spoke, and it came to be. His creation is my greatest inspiration.
You will see Featured Works pages contain some of my most recent works. Here you will find my “Annunciation” - Mary being told by the Angel Gabriel that she will conceive and give birth to Jesus the Christ - Messiah to the Jews.
Also found there is my “He Holds The Keys” a depiction of the Crucifixion with a difference! You see the crucified Christ pictured with the resurrected Christ, powerful, sword of the Spirit in his hand, and holding the keys of sin, death and of David-King of Israel. The resurrected, returned Christ as depicted here is base on the Book of Revelation Chapter 1. This is the Jesus who will come back for those who love him. The one who defeated sin, death and Satan by his death on the cross!
Thank you for visiting my website.
God bless you.

The Annunciation - is the Bible account of how the angel Gabriel visited Mary and told her that she would be the mother of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. This painting illustrates that moment when Mary holding a beautiful gown meets the angel. In her joy and awe she puts her had to her mouth in surprise and wonder at Gabriel's announcement. (Luke 1)
"I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in Me shall live, even after dying." - This drawing shows Sean as Christ in the center, Lazarus and his sisters embracing for the joy of Lazarus's return. You see the tomb in which Lazarus laid and on the top right, the cross of Christ through which resurrection and eternal life was purchased for all who believe.
Lazarus, holding his sisters who rejoice in his resurrection, with his expression seems to be saying, "Do you know the One who raise me from death?"
